Peychaud's Bitters is slightly tart with a lingering bitterness. But don't fret, it's not all lip-smacking; there's plenty of sweetness and spice too. Think of flavours like cherry and plum partying with anise, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Legend has it that Peychaud and his friends experimented with adding his bitters to Sazerac de Forge & Fils brandy, kicking off the creation story of what is often called the first cocktail, the Sazerac. Not only do we love what it brings to cocktails, but we also honour its place in cocktail history as one of the key ingredients that shaped our understanding of cocktails.
Peychaud's Bitters, crafted in 1803, has become a cornerstone of cocktail making. In 1832, Peychaud opened his apothecary in New Orleans, introducing locals to his bitters. After experimenting with adding his bitters to brandy, his concoction grew to become a bar staple.
