There's a reason the saying goes that a "bar without Angostura is like a kitchen without salt and pepper". When you think bitters, this is bottle that defined it for you. Hints of sweet navel oranges mingle with the bitter bite of blood orange, balanced by warm spices like cardamom and cinnamon, accented by notes of gentian and quinine.
The essential elements of the first cocktail were defined as spirit, sugar, and bitters. That's why we bow down to all great bitter types, in particular Angostura Orange. This orange bitters holds a place in our heart for its beautiful aroma and taste, and the fact that the delicate citrus can elevate so many cocktails.
Developed as a tonic by German surgeon in 1824, Angostura's recipe remains a closely guarded familial secret. In fact, only one person knows the full recipe at any given time. The brand's roots trace back to Venezuela, with a move to Trinidad in 1875. Their iconic label bears a Vienna World's Fair medal from 1873.
